Lawrence Peter Berra was born in St. Louis in 1925. He grew up in a neighborhood with lots of boys and they played all kinds of sports. He got up in baseball in 1934 because the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series with a group of players known as The Gas House Gang. As a teenager, tried out for the Cardinals but the offer was only half of what his friend, Joe Garigiola got and so Yogi went back to work in a shoe factory. He tried out the next year and the Yankees offered him $500.00 as a signing bonus and he took it. But he was also ordered to take a pre-induction physical and he passed and joined the US Navy. He served at D-Day and was discharged in May, 1946 and went back to baseball. The Yankees called him up to the big leagues at the end of the year and the rest is history. Come and hear the stories of the 10 World Series rings and the MVP awards and the All-Star Games. Yogi Berra was one of the greatest baseball players ever.
