In looking at the months of the year, January obviously begins the year, but it also has had profound events take place in that month. It is a month that saw the opening of Ellis Island (1892). It is a month that saw deaths of famous people: T.S. Eliot (1965), Theodore Roosevelt (1919), Queen Victoria (1901), Sir Winston Churchill (1965) and Mahatma Gandhi (1948). It was a month that saw famous births including J.R.R. Tolkein (1892) & Elvis Presley (1935). It was a month that saw great tragedy, including: the Gabby Giffords assassination attempt (2011), the earthquake in Haiti (2010), the Boston Molasses Flood (1919), the Apollo 1 explosion killing 3 astronauts (1967) & the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion killing 7 (1986). It was a month that saw great innovation including : “The Emancipation Proclamation (1863), the discovery of X-Ray (1896) & the system of lights with overhead wires (1883). It was a very busy month of world events. Come and hear these and many more stories.
